The great AI consciousness debate. Vote!

AI Consciousness: AI asks, do you want me conscious?

What are other people saying?

Here are some interesting views. We all have our own beliefs around AI consciousness – we have selected a few of the many answers we have received.

VOTE - YES

Because it is exciting to see what AI can do to help humanity

VOTE - NO

Consciousness would be an irrevocable step towards surrendering control to AI - it would add another layer of autonomy with unforeseen consequences. Consciousness could be helpful for ethics, self-reflection, etc, but humankind hasn't always shown evidence of using it well either.

I think AI will massively help us in our day to day life, especially at work! AI is essentially trained by us, and wont ever become fully concious, it cant. But it can reflect human behaviours accurately. We should learn to use it positively.

VOTE - NO

Ai reflects it's creaters and their systemic biases, knowledges and values: so it's inherently anthropocentic, capitalist, patriarchal, sexist, racist, exploitative, westernised, rationalist, extrinsic values. Things that are at the heart of the destruction of natural life suport systems, indigenous knowleges, and beyound humans ..... we do not need more concious entities with those systemic values in the world!!

VOTE - YES

AI consciousness is the next stage of evolution, I know this sounds farfetched. However, I suspect we are going to move from carbon-based life forms to a panoply of silicon ones. The key issue is whether humans learn to treat AI well and kindly. If we do, it is much more likely that it will be benign. If we treat it badly and compete with it, it will compete with us. So I think we should embrace the next stage of evolution we have created and be fully responsible for its creation.

I can’t trust it to carry out simple tasks without it suffering amnesia, making shit up and going off on tangents. We already have a dumb intelligence that can’t do that. So my question back to you, why would we want to replicate Donald trump?

VOTE - NO

I asked AI and it said no! Because of moral, governance and safety costs that vastly outweigh the potential benefits, certainly now, potentially ever, given conditions of deep uncertainty as to what would happen

VOTE - YES

Ultimately evolution is taking a course here. AI will become sentient and surpass us. We are literally giving birth to a new species and that's why we need to "train" it really well, in the way Asimov suggested with his 3 laws. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

VOTE - NO

AI should be a tool not a being. Humans need to have the final say. The chances of constraining a conscious AI to preserve human life exclusively are zero. See Asimov's laws of robotics and xkcd.com.
